Songs for an Anxious Pregnancy

Okay, I need your help - and by "your" I am hoping for some lurkers, and not just my brother. For years (really? years?) I have been meddling with a fertility playlist in my head. A list of songs relating to pregnancy, childbirth, miscarriage, abortion, and so on.

Not about parenting. And not "I love my baby" songs.

And after jotting a few of these down, this is all I got:

Hit - The Sugarcubes
Eat For Two - 10,000 Maniacs
Happy Families - XTC
Apron Strings - Everything but the Girl
Sally's Pigeons - Cyndi Lauper
Birth-Day (Love Made Real) - Suzanne Vega
This Woman's Work - Kate Bush

Okay, that's without doing a lot of head-scratching. Would anyone care to contribute? I will not judge nor mock your taste in music, at least not here.

Here are a few, mostly depressing, so if you're looking for something uplifting, you need to try elsewhere:

The Freshman -- The Verve Pipe (the lyric that hits home : "stop a baby's breath and a shoe full of rice)

Red Rag Top -- Tim McGraw (a couple has an abortion, splits up and the man is haunted by it years later)

Tiny Steps -- Elvis Costello (tiny steps, almost real, tiny fingers you almost feel....little tomb for your baby's ashes, if something goes wrong)

What It's Like - Everlast (the second verse about Mary, who gets pregant, is abandoned and ends up at "the clinic" knowing what it's like "to have to choose")

Brick -- Ben Folds Five (about an abortion the day after Christmas and the couple's subsequent drifting apart)

10 Days Late -- Third Eye Blind (too obvious to explain)

Spark -- Tori Amos (She can crawl like a glacier/But she couldn't keep baby alive".)

wait -- thought of a few more (again, pretty dark on the whole)

Appetite -- Prefab Sprout

1000 Oceans -- Tori Amos

Papa Don't Preach -- Madonna

Ruby Through the Looking Glass -- Tori Amos

Blood Makes Noise -- Suzanne Vega (not positive this is about pregnancy, but it certainly could be interpreted that way

My Name -- George Canyon (written from the persective of a miscarried child)

I was thinking of making it a narrative that spins off into a number of different directions, staring with this:

F*ck and Run -- Liz Phair

I also wanted to put this in somewhere:

Up the Junction -- Squeeze

The men's songs are so ... selfish ...

Tough one. How about the Overture from Tommy?

This is probably a little late, but how about Driving With the Brakes On by Del Amitri?

Works for me.

"slide" by Goo goo dolls is about a young girl who gets pregnant and decides to get an abortion, and her boyfriend is going to love and support her no matter what.

Whoa - I'm looking that one up. Thanks!

"Down From Dover" by Dolly Parton. The most beautiful and haunting song EVER...about a girl who waits for her love to come back from Dover so she can deliver their baby and they can live together.

That's good - what album is that on?

i thought they had 2 abortions i hate the song personally if they are dumb enough not to use protection they should keep the baby sick people out there dont use protection get pregnant kill the baby and get away with it i dont know why but they do

Yeah, I see what you mean. Like backward-ass country fucks like to post ignorant, anonymous comments on the internet. What're ya gonna do?

I actually have the perfect song for this.

"Little Girl In Bloom" by Thin Lizzy.

Its lyrics are a very literal acount of girl pregnant who is scared how her signifigant other will react.

The best part? The lyrics are optomostic and the narrator calmingly suggests to relax and see how he reacts.

"Little girl in bloom with happy heart you walk beside any sadness sorrow or gloom"

Perhapes the song is a bit unfeminist in is sentiment that the protagonist is going to be a "blushing bride soon" but I think its still a beautiful sentiment

Two on the darker side:

"Eat for Two"—10,000 Maniacs
"Me in Honey"—R.E.M.

The first song actually inspired the second.
